Chassis Steel
Hi everybody,
After reading the book for a couple of times and reading kit car magazines for ages i have decided its about time i started building my own car. I am starting this weekend but need to get the steel ordered this week so it will be delivered before the end of the week. I spoke with a couple of local steel stockholders and they said i can get rolled steel 25x25mm square section with 2, 2.5 & 3mm wall thicknesses OR 25x25mm ERW tube with a 1.2, 1.5 & 2mm wall thickness. Any ideas which wall thickness i should go for or what you have used? All help or advise would be great, think i may be needing plenty of it over the next few months/years!! Thanks |

Out of interest what is the difference between ERW and rolled steel tube?
I am tempted by the flat pack kits to save time but have the use of my dads workshop with bandsaw so will try and save a bit of money where i can. Thanks for the help. |

The book specifies 1.6 tube (16 gauge). By moving from 1.5 to 2.0 wall thickness you get a 21% decrease of beam deflection for a 30% increase in weight.
