Chassis Stamping - where?
After a bit of work I now have a VIN number
Next stage now is to stamp it into the chassis. I've got some 6mm letter and number stamps now I just need to decide on a location. Obviously needs to be on the drivers side. I was leaning towards stamping the top rail that braces the front frame. Has anyone stamped this rail and was it acceptable. Anyone got any reccomendations or pictures of where they stamped theirs? Thanks in advance Dave

Hi David,
I'm not too sure how successful you'd be stamping tube, as the force required may deform it more than indent the numbers/letters. It would be better to stamp a plate and weld that on. Kind regards John

I stamped straight to the chassis in 2 places and then attached 2 pre stamped plates, 1 where only I know.
There is also a manufacturers VIN plate, I.e. A blank eBay plate stamped with the correct details. Mr DVLA liked that probably because he understood the VIN plate. |

You could make a fem small aluminium plates, stamp them and rivet on in places only you know about. Production cars have riveted on plates, can't see it being a problem.

I thought you had to stamp the chassis and also have a vin plate attached also.
I failed sva on the point of not having the chassis number stamped into it(2004)although i had a vin plate riveted on. |

Production vehicles have vin stamped into the metal part of the chassis that is not readily/easily removeable for obvious reasons,Some have stamped a metal plate and welded it to the chassis and have passed IVA.
The tag on cars can be ally and in most cases have a plastic one stuck to B/post or door pillar and similar is placed in in the n/s/f lower corner of the front screen. Tag has front and rear axle weight, gross weight and train weight and sometimes engine and paint/trim info. A dremel or engraver might give decent results.
