Default Chassis mods for BMW staight 6 engine

I know people, including Chris's BIL, have made cars using the BMW 6, and of course it's possible to build a car around virtually any road engine.

My question is about whether the standard chassis could possibly accommodate one, and, if not, how much longer an engine compartment would be needed?

I think the problem would be the width of the engine. It would be possible to get the engine in but I think you'd have problems with the ancillaries and in particular the steering column.

Cheers

Chris

the steering column gets in the way in the BMW.
The engine itself is not that wide, especially the older 12 valves but as Chris says i think you would have to get a little creative with the ancilary brackets which are generously postioned and the exhaust manifold. It is quite a canted setup aswell, which is why the primaries want to ocupy the same space as the steering column and why it seems wide.

If you want some measurements of an old M20 lump let me know.

I'm going to continue lookng into this. I note what you guys say, and the particular problem as Chris points out, I think, is likely to be the steering and the ancillaries.

The subject continues to interest me, mainly because of the number of potential donors there are out there. I'm considering doing some chassis again and would like to be able to offer something a bit different.
