Oh dear, you may have opened a can of worms here!
The Roadster has been built with so many engines now it's kinda down to choice. Theres everything from the standard Pinto as per the book up to a V6 thats been shoehorned in! Whatever's chgosen will require variations to the design, and I don't think anyone on here will be able to give you a definite: this one is better than any other because... (Except maybe the V6 ) I'm using a 2l DOHC cos thats what my donor came with. This is the usual way of working, so you'll probably get a few reccomendations for the mx5 engine now too. I haven't really helped much have I? |

What power are you looking for.? Any budget.?
I'm using a rx7 rotary, but if I wasn't I'd go for the Mazda v6.

I'd say, unless you go the MX-5 route altogether, or stay with the donor Pinto or CVH, Zetec is a good choice. Easy and cheap to get ~160 bhp out of it (bike carbs and a reasonable exhaust), and ~180-200 is not far off, too (fast road cams and bike throttles). Will mate with the Sierra gearboxes without much trouble. If you break it, the replacement will set you off ~100 quid or so.
So, definitely look at the Zetec, unless you have an aversion to four pots or Ford engineering. More info here: http://www.toyne.org.uk/zetec.html

I'm not looking for a wish listjust what every one would recommend for engine type or better still what you have used. I know that the mx5 engine is a direct copy of the ford duratec engine. In all honesty I would like the 1.6 corsa vxr engine. Any one used that and can any one advise of any issues with the 1.6 vxr engine

Anything is possible and it is very much a case of personal preference.
I've not got any experience of the VXR lump, but I think Westfield have used it, so there should be some info on it around the net - Which bellhousing/gearbox to use, engine mounts etc. Being a turbo, theres another system to worry about and route around everything else compared to an NA set up. I suppose it depends if you want a journey of discovery or a known solution |
