Grrr paint

Have spent a jolly couple of hours spraying the chassis in primer.

Then noticed a couple of welds that were still only tacked

Still, better to notice them now, than when the chassis falls apart at 70mph.

So, things I have learned this evening

• Painting is boring, but a spraygun makes it bearable
• It's easy to miss a weld with this many joints (not the smokey kind )
• Painting is boring
• Overspray gets everywhere
• Painting is boring
• Use lots and lots lots and lots lots and lots lots and lots of dustsheets
• Painting is boring
• Putting your elbow in the can of primer is not a good idea
• Did I mention, Painting is boring

Obviously, said paint is now drying, so I have time (and primer) on my hands, hence the overly excessive use of formatting

Anyone else had a fun evening???

Not a fun evening but a very satisfying,

I have just finished a 427 page report complete with two site diagrams, critical path analysis, cross sectional diagrams and mass haul calcs. Finished 4 days early. Happy days.

and yes i found the odd weld that needed doing too

Yes, I remember the fun you had

I'm smiling already, because it will be someone else's turn soon

Hopefully crack on with a 2nd coat tomorrow morning (after sorting those welds) and maybe even the 3rd coat of primer in the evening.
Then it's time for colour (whichever I go for in the end)

I would rate the painting as the worst part of the build

Did you find that about half way through the painting, the cost of powder coating seemed like a bargain

Where do those missed welds come from !!??
I am sure those pesky Pixies sneak in when I am not looking & nick em

It's certainly shaping up to be, although profiling all the tubes must come close as well

I have thought about PC, but I don't yet have an engine, so need to put the mounts in when I decide what I'm doing. Plus, if I had sent it to the powdercoaters, I would not have noticed the missing welds

I don't know, surely there must be a system for making sure they are all done, it is soo easy to become blind to it once you have just spent a few hours welding up all the joints.

Maybe use little strips of insulating tape on every weld position, then take them off just before the actual weld??

Life really is too short for some jobs!

Definately getting everything powdercoated, I've done my years of spraying stuff in a single garage (quite a few whole cars!) and covering everything with overspray, no matter how many dustsheets you use, getting high on paint fumes, annoying the neighbours etc.!

The cost of powdercoating really isn't that bad against the material costs for a good paint job, and while everything is out of your garage for a week, you can finish paintig the donor parts and clear the garage up ready for the clean work of assembly.

well, luckily enough I have a double garage, but it is full of the usual junk (Lawn mowers, mountain bike etc.).

I use a proper mask, so the fumes are no bother. Plus, the paint I am using uses White spirit for a solvent, so not a giddy high inducing as others anyway.

I would have had it powder coated, but the chassis isn't actually finished, still need to do engine & gearbox mounts, oh and headlight mounts.

The donor parts are all done, they were done before I had the steel for the chassis. Everything is cleaned, rebuilt, painted, labelled, and stored in plastic bags or boxes

Anyway, just fired on the second coat of primer. It will get a third coat tomorrow evening, then left for a couple of days to dry off. Then it's colour time

Due to the lingering paint fumes, the garage is gonna be out of bounds today, so am just going to clean my ChAvSTRA, as in REALLY clean it
