Front wing stay

Can anybody tell me does it it really matter if the above is boltd to the front of the hub?

Where else is there to bolt them?
Surely they have to move with the wheel

hi Axle,

There,s no reason in my opinion that you couldn,t bolt it to the front of the hub,
BUT
You would need to reposition part WS3 further forward along part WS2 to accomodate the change of position of its mounting point,
If you didn,t then you will fowl the brake hose where it enters the caliper.

added text............. when I say you would fowl the brake line, what I mean is .......the round tube that goes from the hub level upto the actual cycle wing would fowl the brake line, its already a tight fit, but if you weld WS3 further forward along WS2 then this would solve the clearance issue on the brake line.

I am new here, so just saw this posting, so I am way late to comment. I also questioned the mounting of the fender bracket on the backside of the hub. However I decided to do it as per the book because I realized it is the best way for me.

By putting in the longer bolt and nutting it on the backside, you can remove and replace the bracket without loosening the mushroom. The bolt and nut needed are the same as the suspension bushing bolts, so I already had extras.

The front legs of the brackets I built are vertical in front of the hub. there is only 3/4" between the head of the mushroom fixing bolt and the leg of the bracket. This means removing the bolt to remove the bracket would be a real pain if it was fixed at the front.

sounds like a good idea and leaves the ball joint alone which is a good thing too inmo

Seem to remember the brackets I made picked up on lower ball joint nutty bit and a caliper bolt and left the mushroomyness bit alone...long lump of flat oval in front of upright with a short bit running backwards above upright to catch the rear of the wing, there was a short lump of 1/2 pipe used at the bottom to brace the two oval tubes..........but i might I have dreamt all that as it was a long time ago and seems the lads have since changed things to accept willwood stuff

I built mine according to the Gibbs book plans except I made mine out of a single tube, bent in a U shape. Actually this is what is shown in the photos in the book. The drawings show the bracket made out of two tubes, but that is not what the photos show.

As you can see in my photo, there is very little room to remove the mushroom bolt, so it would be a pain to try to remove it if the fender brace was bolted under it on the front of the hub.
