Faulty connections
Yes, faulty connections can be a real problem to detect. Even more so when they are of an intermitent nature.
 Having worked on a fair bit of marine electrics. I have over the years learnt to carefully solder each joint or connection & then seal with heat shrink tubing wherever possible. If I am in one of my anal moods, i'll do a continuity test as well .
