If your looking for some more heat to try again, then get yourself a bottle of propane and a blowlamp for it. I picked one up a few years ago from machine mart fo £30 which was a 'cheap' unbranded Sievert unit- they now sell the proper branded ones for £80. You can get lots of interchangeable burners so they are very useful for that sort of work and are good enough for getting steel bright red so more than up to most jobs.
