They do need to go in the right way round because the brake linings are built with a leading and trailing edge which brings on a self servo effect. I dont think you want to dial that out. Mind you that may be a bonus on a haynes!!!!!!!

Hanbrake cables normally come into the bottom of backplates and look forward but thats most things dont know for sure on the sierra.
