You should defiantly be able to put a type 9 into reverse with the vehicle stationary (without even using the clutch). Have you adjusted the throw on the gear selector, stopping it from sliding past the reverse detent?

If you have access, you can remove the cover plate behind the selector arm and check to see if the lever is moving correctly, then pop it back on.

The plastic saddle lasts for ages, unless its broken, I wouldn't bother replacing it.
