If there is only the one adjusting ring then there will be a grub screw to lock the ring against the thread.If you lower the platform the spring is sat on this will lower the car,hence raising it will raise the ride height of the car.There is usually a small adjuster on the lower part of the shock also,this will have a + and - on it and usuallyi would go through the full range and count the number of clicks.Then back it off to half of the clicks and use this as a starting point.If your ride is still harsh after adjusting it to the minimum you will likely need to change the springs for some softer ones.
