Default Steering column route

When I was at Newark the other day, I noticed that a lot of other seven type cars run the steering column above what we know as TR8 (bearing mounted above). this moves the column up, possibly preventing contact with engine mounts or the front upright "U1 or U2".
Just wondering if this is possible on the Haynes as I'm about to mount engine and steering column position and the extra options may be handy as hoping to use the zetec standard inlet.
