Default Chassis number and forms

ok, i'm about to write to the Wimbledon dvla office asking them to issue me with a chassis number, but i was wondering, should i ask for anything else like forms i'll be needing late on. if so what are they called? Thanks

At the moment the way i see getting it on the road is:

1)get chassis number
2)finish build
3)dvla inspection
4)iva
5)send off all forms and get it registered

is this basically what needs to be done.

From what I have seen recently 3and 4 are the other way round. Inspection after IVA. May be wrong though.

Yes you're right Steve, IVA is first on the list to do. They ain't too bothered about chassis number but you're still better off getting that first.

If you get chance to call into your DVLA office and find the person that deals with new registrations they will help, i have found them pretty good sofar. Don't forget to put together a good build log with all your build fotos, receipts and any other info in, you also need to hand in your chassis number plates from your donor car if you are going for an age related plate.

It's not too bad you just need to build a bit of a relationship with them.....AndyH

If i remember correctly it needs to be between 14 and 20 characters and contain letters and numbers but really you can make it up to suit.

Make a suitable one up and send a letter to local DVLA explaining what you are doing and if its okay to use this number. They replied back to me confirming it was okay and they will then reserve this number for you.

Mine was:

HAYNES0204HUGIL2009

I sent of a chassis number I made up and asked if it was OK, ie. not duplicated anywhere else.

They returned with the OK and an envelope full of forms. Very helpful.

Stockton office btw...

I made mine up and they siad i couldnt use it as it had the letters HAYNES in it, they said it may breach haynes copyright laws!

I didnt bother trying to argue its a "HAYNES" roadster, built from a haynes book! so i reckon they wouldnt mind.

I just used whatever they gave which was a 17 digit no. that had to be stamped onto the offside of the chassis and attached to a plate elsewhere on the vehicle. This was to be carried out by a local garage and the form stamped and returned to prove it

I stamped it myself and got my local frienly garage to stamp it for me

I think this has been the process for a few builders now and the chassis no.s seem to all start SABTVR
