The dirty blackish is protective oil to stop the metal rusting. If you get clean bright stuff your gona find it rusting.

Are you aware of the different types of box section? Black coloured stock which comes covered in dirty graphite type oil with very rounded corners is called 'hollow section' and generaly comes in thicker gauges. The bright looking box that you can see a welded seem in is called ERW it has sharper corners and tends to be cleaner but only comes in thinner gauges. You have to tell the stockist what you want other wise it's like walking in to B&Q and just asking for paint. Type steel stockist ( and your area) in to google and see what comes up it will give you some prices to compare. The price they will give you may not include the VAT on the steel or on the delivery so be sure to ask for a total price before you commit to buy.

You can either use 7 lenths of 25x25 2mm ERW or 25x25 1.6mm ERW and you'll also need 3 lenths of 20x20. Expect to pay £7-9 each lengh plus VAT and delivery. Any steel stockist will do, ERW prices are normaly within 50p-£1 between companies.
