Default Starter motor woes

Hope someone can help me here. I've got an LRS707 starter as recommended by several people. But when I offer the starter up to the engine the pinion gear doesn't have enough throw to meet the ring gear. It's a silvertop zetec with a 1.8 flywheel, and a type 9 gearbox. The measurement from mating face of the starter/bellhousing to edge of ring gear is 35mm, and the ring gear is around 5mm thick, so I reckon I need a starter that will put the pinion gear around 40mm from the mating face when it's thrown out. Hope that makes sense, and if anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate them, as I'm having one of those burn the ba?'@&d moments with the car!!!

Cheers

Adrian

Adrian, I can`t help with part nos etc but I have a 1.8 Zetec/type 9 combo & I used a 1.8 CVH starter which went on with only minor mods to the sump webbing. Hope this helps, Dennis.
