Not a Haynes Roadster but still a Pass
Norwich yesterday and passed with flying colours, first time, except for the speedo which gave up the ghost passed 63mph, we fixed / bodge dit there and then and spent an hour or so in the process but the tester said we had until 12 so why give up.
Its not a Haynes Roadster but my next one may well be. SVA is still a scary process but the testers are not, they are very helpfull and true petrol heads. My general observations of the day were that seat belt mounts and heights are important, edges and trim, steering located firmly and with correct clearance from steering joints i.e does not hit any thing when turned lock to lock, wheels don't hit body or wishbones on full lock. They like to see tidy well constructed cars. Brake test is a black art with brake balance calculated taking into account axle weights and center of gravity, when on the rollers the machine flashes up loads of numbers and in my case looked like i had a huge left right imbalance with numbers flashing red all over the place but then the machine has to do calculations on wheel base axle weights and C of G, Passed. I had a Transit van full of tools and spares, trim, fixings etc. |

We loaded up the trailer and as i was getting the MAC from thew tester another VOSA employee came over from a diffent part of the site, i greeted him and assumed he had come over to look at the car but No he showed me his VOSA ID and said that he thought that the Transit and trailer were over weight and instructed me to take the them over to the weigh bridge.
we were over weight, fair cop gov but a bit sad IMHO. He was to say the least a jobs worth but if thats the law then I am banged to rights. I had MAC in hand and insurance on the chassis number so my solution ( and i was extreemly controlled and polite) was to offer to take the kit off the trailer and drive it back in the rain witout windscreed 120 miles back. VOSA man decided to do some calcs, we were 5.75% over weight, he gave a prohibition order to take the lot back intact to Chelmsford, do not pass go etc, by 17:00 and to ring him when we got back to lift the prohibition order. Oh how we laughed...... however i had passed SVA and by the time we stopped at the road side greasy spood we were all sort of laughing about the whole deal. However if you do use a trailer and tow to Norwich make sure you now the tow weights i.e. what the tow vehicle is allowed to pull and what the trailer weighs |

It's Green/stainless monocoque ,an old school Robin Hood that i rescued a few years ago. I thought long and hard about how to build it and how it would look, in the end i went for a sort of homage to the Lotus seven S3 that it was very loosely based on.
I do think that the Roadster would be a lot easier to build but I bought it and it was down to me to finnish it. Only DVLA to go now then its on the road |
