Don't they check the engine number against the engine number in the v5 at iva though?

They only check the engine number at IVA to make sure it corresponds to the engine number you have put on your application and to determine the age of the engine block for emissions criteria (which you have to prove - easily done for Ford Engines). If you want an age related plate with DVLA you will need to submit the V5 for the donor car to prove that the engine you have used originated from the donor car, otherwise you will get a "Q" plate or if you can prove that all components are new, except one major reconditioned part, a new registration.
I have sent you a PM Steve. Hope that helps....>AndyH

(im building a case for my car to have age related plate) as you only have a logbook and chassis strictly speaking it is worthless to get an age related plate without the orignal parts to go with it. odd thing is the engine block would be the only identifyable bit of a sierra unless it was clearly not a part that was fitted to the car on the logbook |

It all depends on the person at dvla as always
David17 got a new reg even though his parts were all sourced seperately and second hand! Drury who used to post on here got age related i think, even though he was using a zetec he had enough points to get age related The girl who inspected mine said i had the minimum ammount needed for age related but i used the original sierra engine too |

You're right Baz, it states 3 major components used for the donor to get an age related plate. The engine does tend to be one of them and as it is the only traceable component from the donor they like to see it.
BUT as Mark says there are so many anomalies it does depend a lot on the inspector and DVLA local office.... AndyH

Is there any advantage to having an age related plate as apposed to Q plates or new ones? I'm thinking maybe Inusrance?

Insurance can be an issue with some of the brokers, but not with the specialist brokers like adrian flux. The Q plate once on stays on and if you want to put a cherished number plate on at a later date you cant. The only other thing is a Q smacks of the home built kit car made up of loads of bits image. Wrong as this may be resale would be higher with an age related . Can of worms officially open
