Here is another version. Kin cheap as well http://www.burgertuning.com/paddleshift.html it would be worth just using a later auto box to make it all work.It would be the nuts.

I've looked into this a little bit more and it seems its not a very hard upgrade to marry a E39 Steptronic to the M60, then its just a case of finding a paddle/button equipped steering wheel setup which again can fairly easily be mated up.
I've not looked at all the details yet but there does seem to be a few that have done it. I've a long way to go yet before I get to this stage though but still thinking about it |

This auto thing is a ++ situation because you wont need a clutch pedal you can stretch the gear tunnel width at the front and shove the engine right back.
