Sorry, missed this question.

Most "Kitcar" insurers will do a temp cover on the VIN number.
About a month I think (Could be wrong).
Once you have the car all registered, you phone up your insurers and tell them the Reg number.

Joke is you can drive it to the IVA test,
but you cant drive it to the DVLA inspection.

You can get your VIN number at any time. But you will need it for the IVA forms.
As I have said before, I made mine up using birth date and build date.
Some DVLA offices dont like you doing this and prefer to issue it.

I think you just phone up,
tell them what you want to do and they will advise you.

On the above post, I rang the local DVLA office (or what I thought was the local office)only to be put through to Swansea.
I asked about a VIN number for the kit car I am building, after a load of unhelpfull boll0cks the long and short of the story is that your local VLO should be able to issue you a VIN number if you apply in writing (as posted previously by others) and avoid Swansea like the plague as they are not clued up,best of luck.

I can certainly echo that one Flyerncle...
I did exactly the same, and got the same results.
I ended going in person to my local office (Maidstone)
Told them what I was doing, adn what number I wanted.
They checked on their computerthingymagig, and said "YES"
Nobody was more supprised than me.....

But yes the way is to write to your local office and let them issue it.
At least then you will be sure it's OK

HI
From my experience making up your own vin number is fine. BUT if you look like getting a Q plate it will need a VRO number. This number corresponds to the DVLA office that issued it. The story is a long one to why I no this.

Do I ever! Your way sounds like the most painless story I've heard. I'd like a copy of the magic letter please. Do I need a unicorn to deliver it, or maybe print it with dragons blood? All the stories I read on locost involve people spending days in queues and hours arguing on the phone.
