For reasons i can't understand it appears common that the book engine mount solution, using the cast Ford engine mounts if its a pinto, doesn't work. I'm not the first person to discover this, the steering column and the mount both want to be in the same place at the same time. Serieslandy has a thread that shows a solution, but basically its just the same as the 'alternative engines' bit in the book....

If you look at Janine's build pictures, he used the original pinto engine mounts but Made the steering shaft to go around the engine mount. A damn fine build it is too.

I've tried inserting the picture but it won't let me.

Ok i think im with it now!!

just as well you posted this jps!

to clarify, looking back at serieslandys build thread. Am i right in thinking its only the driver side mount that has to b re-made to look something like the "alternative mounts"

Also does this have further knock on effects for the rest of the build? modifying the steering etc?

Yes, its only the drivers side mount which causes a problem and an alternative to modifying the mount is to re route the steering column. I think it makes more sense to change the mount though as its more straight forward and doesn't add something else to potentially go wrong in the steering.

You could keep the book spec off side mount, and just redesign the drivers side one, but I'm going to make my own for both sides so i can use the same rubber mounts on both sides. Otherwise i think there may be an imbalance in the way the engine is 'sprung' (for want of a better word)...

Ill have to look at the alternative mounts in the book when i next get chance to get in the garage.
