Zetec ECU
Ive been offered a complete 2001 blacktop 1.8 zetec for £200. Comes with Loom, alternator, ecu?
Question is, would I be able to run it on the standard ECU without too much ball ache to get it going? Just for a while until I retro fit mega jolt/squirt? Cheers Guys Jas Gray

Hi Jas.
You may be able to run it on the stock ECU but it will be a tall order. Fistly you will have to find a way of by-passing the immobilizer (Pats) & most likely be a real pain finding a way to by-pass a fair few sensors that would not be needed in the Roadster. It's my guess that the stock ECU will still be looking for a signal from them. If you want to use an afermarket ECU. Fuel injection will require Megasquirt or the likes. For bike carbs or webbers, Megajolt will do. One last thing, you'll most likely to need to fit a CAT on an engine that age.

as long as you get the keys and all the immob system with it etc then there is technically no reason why it cant be done.
if it were me doing it i would put the engine on a stand wire it up get it running then strip out the loom of all the things you dont need. back in the days when i played with fiats you had to take the ecu code box and key sensor over to the new car. the problem was the immob system was wired into the engine loom and the accessories loom so you had to move the engine loom to the new car first then hack out the bits you needed from the accessory loom and add to the engine loom. that car ended up as a 2.0 turbo running silly hp through the front wheels
the ford immob system is a lot less complicated than the equiv year fiat system. if you decide to go for it and get stuck i dont mind helping you out. before you start get the electronic workshop manual for the car that it come out of so that you have all the wiring diagrams. i dont know about ford but fiat never put the immob circuits in their diagrams. they were easy to work out though as all the un explained wires in the car were either immob or alarm related |

Cheers for the replys guys.
I realy want to run MS with throttle bodies, but everyone you talk to seems to think its a complete ball ache to get it right. After seeing the state of that fiat wiring loom i think I will just bite the bullet and go for megasquirt. Ash you must have the patience of a fu**ing saint! Dont realy mind running a cat for IVA because Im going for a Q plate. There seems to be a few more of these engines around so if I do manage to make it go bang, should be abit easier (but more expensive) to find a replacement. Also, quite fancey being able to plug the laptop into the car and making a few adjustments after a drive

it used to be quite funny out running db9's and boxter s's. she had to go to make space for the new estate that i needed for my job.
i still feel a bit sad about the whole situation. im hoping that the roadster will ease the pain. if not im going to build another. |
