Default New, Q or Age related?

I am going to use a 1.8 zvh (zetec bottom end with cvh head) turbo engine which produces approximately 225bhp for my build

I built the engine about 4 years ago for my old rs turbo, so i have no idea what the emmisions should be how do i find out?

Will the car have to have a Q plate as i will also be sourcing other parts from a sierra, i have yet to get one when i work out which model I need

what parts can i get away with to get a brandnew plate?

Think to get a new reg you need all new parts or parts that have been referb'd to 'new' condition, believe you need receipts etc to show this. Ie not just a brush with a wire brush and a lick of paint

For a new reg you'd need all new parts, with receipts to prove it, although you're allowed 1 part to be reconditioned to "as new" standard.

For a Q you just need to turn up, they give you a Q if you can't priove the age of the major parts. "Visible smoke" emissions test only here.

For an age related plate you need to use a certain number of parts from a single donor, can't remember off-hand but things like Steering, suspension, engine, gearbox etc.

Of course, if you had a Sierra donor, then got in touch with the DVLA and told them you were sticking the ZVH in it, when it comes around to SVA the engine will be from the donor, it'll say so on the log book

For emissions, how old is your block ? If you can take the engine number and get in touch with ford they can send you a letter proving the age (for a fee) if the engine was made in 1995 or earlier it only has to pass a much less stringent test (passable without FI and a cat). If you SVA your car with a pre '95 engine, then it'll have the same emissions limit no matter what engine goes in in the future.

thanks for your answer it has made it alot clearer

A new plate is out of the question, is there any advatages between a Q plate and an age registerd one?

i presume i would just send the log book for the sierra off changing the engine number to the zvh one?

the block comes from a K reg xr2i 16v.

The only real advantage is the lower emissions limit for the Q plate, but then if/when it comes to selling, the none-Q plate would be worth more. There's a bit of stigma attached to Q plates, probably to do with many stolen/recovered and any other car who's identity/age can't be proved being given a Q reg.

Also if you're considering getting a different reg number like a private plate, once a Q always a Q, you can't transfer. With the age related plate you can change reg numbers, but only with one that's older than the one you have. For example, my car is on an old S (1978) and I can only put a plate on that's older than 1978. It's to stop people sticking this years prefix/suffix on an older car and passing it off as new I suppose, but it kinda rules out the cheap and plentiful new DVLA reg's.

Yup, I'd just send off the logbook as if I'd just fitted a new engine and updated the details with the engine number.
