Smile Rotary Engined Kit Car?????

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone has attempted (or though about) putting a Wankel Rotary Engine in a kit car, can it be done? Because for what they do, very high revving, easily turbocharged, huge power from such a small capacity and all for reasonable little maintance seems like a worth while conversion.

I used to have a mazda rx-8 and think they are a fantastic engine, people think they are high maintenance and use a lot of oil but they don't. Only downfall is they are very thirsty and low torque but these don't matter in a roadster.

My next choice will be a wankel, perfect compromise between a bike and car engine. 230bhp at 10k rpm.........

Keep seeing a Red Mk2 Escort on the rally circuit with a "Wankel" - very quick indeed!

The only downfall of them as spud says is the serious lack of low end torque when in a road car (feel like they couldnt pull the skin of a rice pudding until 6k )

But in a lightweight roadster this wouldnt be an issue and i bet it would be fantastic

They are a superb piece of engineering as are the honda s2000 and integra type r engines

Just a shame it would cost thousands to do

Just to pee on the bonfire,the coils are £100 each and there are four,plugs also a fortune and when something goes wrong its mega bucks as a customer of mine found to his cost, £1700 (coils,plugs,sensors,cat.)and still had to go to dealers to clear codes.

Plus side as others have said they go like stink !
