Rear Uprights
Hi I have stated fabricating the rear uprights and have a problem. The book says the the tube that acts as a spacer for the two upper 3mm plates on the fixture should be 50mm long. This would obviously mean a 50mm gap for the top suspention wishbone joint to fit. Howoever the top link should be the standard 44mm width for all polly bushed joints.
Have I read this wrong? Can anyone help. As an assides we are using a e36 BMW 318 donner car and have modified the diff mounting to suit. The uprights have been adapted to suit cut down BMW hubs. Once the design is proven we would be willing to provide this service for other people. Cheers Graeme |

Fig 5.25 Pg 71. 12mm internal diameter tube, 44mm long....
The next figure however does show a gap of 50mm in the template used to set the jig It will be 44mm because that is the overall length of the bush that fits into the suspension bush tubes Also, probably better off posting this in the "Running gear" forum Sean |

Thanks for that. My book clearly states 50mm long for Fig 5.25. The book was published in Feb 2007, I take it you have a revised edition.
I am new to these forum things - how would I change to the 'running gear. forum |

I have the reprint - July 2008.
It takes a moderator to move an existing post to another sub-forum. But it probably doesn't make a huge bit of difference here, as it's still quite a small forum. Just have a little look at all the sub-forums on the home page, then pick one thats fairly close. Good luck with the build, the bimmer is a decent motor to use, German quality and all that Sean |

Hi Sean
Yes the BMW is built well. Bob and I have conciderable experience as amateurs in prepairing race cars, Alfa's, Escourts, Fiats, Renaults and in my case Formula Fords, but are impressed by the build quality when we stripped our 318. We bought the beemer for £85 and sold the redundant bits for £190. A rare bargain! If anyone is intersted in what we have done to adapt the design for the beemer they can contact me via my e-mail graeme.webb1@ntlworld.com Cheers Graeme |
