Default headphones/ earphones in a car ?

It would be nice to have some music for longer trips but the general consensus seems to be that even the mightiest of amps and speakers the size of Bolivia would be barely audible at speed.

That got me onto thinking about using headphones or even in the ear type earphones. As I see it this isn't illegal in itself but the police can take the view that it is blocking out the sounds of other road users and therefore an unsafe distraction.

Personally I can't see it would be any sort of distraction in a 7 as it's difficult to hear much over the sound of the exhaust in any event. Also the deaf cannot hear other road users at all and no one tells them they shouldnt drive.

It's more just the question of whether the police would ever pull someone over for wearing headphones in a car.

Has anyone had experience of being stopped or warned for this ?

I'm thinking of having crash helmets with intercom in my car anyway, assume you could plumb an ipod into a setup like that?

Any thing that has a siren has blue lights and any body that hits the horn in either anger or alarm would be doing so due to your standard of driving. I guess it comes down to how often do you check your mirrors, how much attention you pay at junctions and wether or not your in the habbit of cutting people up.

When I am on my bike I use silicone earplugs which means you hear absolutely zilch ( apart from you own screams ).This actually seems to take away distractions and make you more aware of things going on around. Its quite pleasant.I would find earphone music a distraction but to each their own

I'm going with the MX5 headrest speakers with just a MP3 shallow fit player. it's half the depth of a normal cd player.

Depends on the plod,Heard of a case of someone getting nicked and prosecuted for driving without due care and attention for wearing personal stereo.

And I definately know of someone done for wearing a crash helmet in a saloon car,He did lip the plod and PC said he was trying to hide his identity, he did also say it was a religous belief so got what he deserved .
