Mot
I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on this. My friend around the corner is building a cobra replica and took his car prior to the iva test for an mot.
I know you do not need to have an mot..... But .. Is it legal to drive your car to a local mot test centre prior to the iva test as long as you are insured? Personally I would rather take it for a spin and get the brakes, emissions checked first but don't really want to trailer it. I've also heard that if the car is booked on the system it will need an mot every year instead of after 3. Am I correct or have I misinterpreted this? I've tried searching for old threads but cannot find any Thanks David

No, it's not legal to drive to an MOT before you've had an IVA.
The only times you can drive it before it's registered are to the IVA and back and to a pre-booked garage appointment to fix it following an IVA fail. |

I took mine for MOT (via some nice back lanes)and asked them to just "go through the procedures" without any paperwork . They were happy to do that and didnt even charge me because they were happy to play with something out of the ordinary.I think it is a very cheap and useful way of checking general
operational efficiency and safety before IVA. Last edited by ayjay : 12th April 2014 at 11:42 AM. |

The only time it is acceptable to drive a vehicle to an mot station without an mot is for the purpose of taxing it and it must be insured and the test must also be pre booked, had the local constabulary contact garage to check more than once.
It is perfectly legal(or was)to mot a vehicle on the chassis number alone (imports).

I had my first MOT yesterday following IVA & registering the car last August. The online tax portal would not allow me to Re Tax the car without an MOT. I thought that it may have been exempt for three years. The reminder form has a note printed saying "This car requires an MOT"
The garage called me and asked for the V5 as there where no details on the MOT system. The inspector said there was not much to check as everything was new. Think they enjoyed doing it and showed interested in building one. The car passed first time! Just need to wait till the end of the month to tax it!

Looks like another DVLA cockup, normally a new build as yours is would need MOT 3 years later.
DVLA put little data on the database and you normally have to add it yourself when testing and if the is no VSI it makes life interesting. Vehicle Specific Information. VSI.
