1.8 Sierras
Hi all,
Quick question on donor cars - do all 1.8 Sierras have the CVH engine and in turn does that mean they all have type 9 gearboxes? Thanks, J |

HI
There are also 1.8 pinto engines as in the book. Frank |

Are the 1.8 pintos any good? And are they usually mated to a type 9? I've got an offer of a car that I might be able to pick and choose what I want and, to be honest, I'm thinking of going Zetec rather than pinto.

Hi
If you are going for the zetec the 1.8 chv would be a better doner. The chv sump can be lowerd to fit the zetec. Im also think the mt75 and the typ 9 box will bolt up. All the rest of the doner as the book. Frank http://www.flickr.com/photos/15477685@N06/ |

Given the choice I'd go for the zetec, if you have the money/time to sort out the ignition and fueling.
The pinto's advantage is that it drops in with the standard carb and ignition. I've got the 1.8 in the Roadster, and a 2.0 in my locost, to be honest I can't feel much difference. Cheers Chris |

Thanks Chris. You have the 1.8 Pinto in your Roadster or CVH? Does anyone know of a good place to help me identify the engine types (presumably by engine number?) and gearbox types (presumably this is the position of reverse gear?)

Type-9 has a steel casing, MT-75 is larger and has an ally casing, with lots of "webbing". Have a look at Rob Lane's gearbox page here http://www.robs7.com/ I'll have a look later for pics of CVH and Pinto lumps, I'm off out at the mo'

UncleF has sorted out the gearboxes for you, the most obvious difference between the pinto and the CVH is that the exhaust is on the right in a pinto and on the left on the CVH (as seen from the drivers seat or gearbox end of the block). The exhaust is also on the right in the zetec but it has a twin cam cover - this drawing and pictures might help. Zetec CVH Pinto Cheers Chris |

Thanks Chris. Been to look at the car today at the breakers... not good - have to dismantle it there and then - I thought they were stripping parts for people (my mistake!)
So I went to another breakers who said he had nothing for Sierras and describe them as the proberbial rocking horse droppings - something about them being really popular now in the banger racing circuit. I've been looking on ebay but where else have people found them? |
