How to fill a steering rack?
Hi,
I have to fill my steering rack with grease now. But I've never done that before in my life, and I have no idea how to proceed. I have a 200g tube of steering grease, but how to fill the rack? I looked for tips on the Internet, but I couldn't find anything really explicit. How do I know I put too much or not enough grease? Is it supposed to be only grease and no air inside, or it does not matter? If you have tips for me, you're more than welcome to share them with the newbie I am Thanks in advance.

Don't try and fill the rack with grease with it all assembled it will just sit around one end and leave the other end dry. Pull the inner section out and smear the rack in as much grease as you can, do the same with the pinion. Reassemble with new gaiters and wipe clean.

Thank you very much for the reply Phil.
I had a go today, and did exactly as you explained. It was actually very easy. I put back the gaiters with lock ties, and everything seems to be fine now. 2013-08-20_12-36-46 par Voucht71, sur Flickr 2013-08-20_12-37-12 par Voucht71, sur Flickr 2013-08-20_12-39-31 par Voucht71, sur Flickr 2013-08-20_13-16-35 par Voucht71, sur Flickr Thanks again for the help :-)
