Alternator Wiring
Went to the local scrappy today and got a nice little alternator off of a Honda CRX
The only problem is i can't quite work out the terminal connections on it! They are labeled on the sticker Obviously the post goes to the alternator IG - ignition live? L - Live ? FR - ????? |

Here is the wiring for Honda using the 4pin Denso
L = Ignition lamp IG - for Ignition switch protected by15A fuse C - goes to computer then back out to ELD (Electric Load protector) B - (recharge wire) goes to battery protected by 15A fuse FR -goes to computer. the numbers on alternator plug should be ; 1 = C 2 = IG 3 = L 4 = FR Hopefully this can give you a basic idea, but since you do not have the Honda wiring on your ride, perhaps these Denso schematics applicable to Toyota can help in a vague way... Just use the wires needed to connect to function, no need for the computer crap as per Honda. |

Note that Honda engines turn counterclockwise, so the fan inside the alternator will run opposite to its intended direction. It might not be too much of a problem. I got a Hitachi alternator off a Nissan though.

I have a book here with all the plug layouts. The unmarked terminal on your picture is to the battery and shown as S a charge sensing wire, really important this one it stops the alternator cooking the battery . FR according to this book is field rectified, god knows what thats used for.

be careful with nippon alternators when shopping as there are some that are wired up a bit odd and need a relay to make them work .
nothing that cant be worked around but worth paying attension |

Today it took me an hour or two to get my Hitachi alternator off a Nissan Sunny to charge. I even took it apart again to look for some obvious failures.
Apart from the charge cable, it's got two wires going out of it: L (dashboard charge light) and S (sense, ignition +). I hooked up the wires, but no voltage appeared on the BAT pin. I almost declared it dead, but tried switching the wires around. BAM! 43 volts on output! Turns out, I connected the dashboard light has to ground instead of the ignition +, that prevented the alternator from charging.
