A few engine questions
Hello,
The engine has started up, but there are a couple of details I still haven't figured out. 1 – Fan connector. On the donor (Sierra 2,0i DOHC 1992), the electric fan assembly was connected to the connector shown on the second picture (I tagged the connector when I removed the loom, so I'm sure of that). I haven't the fan assy with me any more, so I can't check, but I checked on the net and I am pretty sure there was only one connector. However, there is another connector, unmarked on my loom, which seems to has some connexion with the fan. It is shown on the first picture. This connector comes from the thermostat housing, which is beside the air inlet manifold. Which connector do I need to use to connect my fan*? The electric fan I bought comes with two cable, positive and earth, but also with a relay and the loom to connect it (I guess this has to be used only if the fan has to be connected to an engine with no original electric fan, like the Pinto for example). My engine has one, so I guess there is already a switch and relay in the loom from the donor. Any idea how to connect my fan and where, for it to start when the water reached a certain temperature*? FanConnectors.jpg 2 – Yellow relay On the donor, 2 yellow relays were clipped to the frame of the ECU. You can see them on the 2 first pictures below. I tagged both of them, but I couldn't find the matching connector for one of them on my loom. Is it possible it was connected to a piece of the loom I voluntary left on the donor, like electric windows or something like that*? If you know what these relays are used for, please let me know. YellowRelay.jpg 3 – Black Box What is this black box*? I can't figure out what is it utility. As you can see on the picture, there is a rubber hose connected to the 90° fitting of the right compartment of the box. When I removed this part from the donor, I tagged the hose «*connected to a hard pipe coming from the fuel tank*». Not very useful now, as I have no idea where this pipe should be connected. Derivation from the return line*? From the fuel feeding line*? From the vent*? What do you think*? BlackBox.JPG All replies or comments, complete or partial, will be much appreciated. 1-
Pictuer one shows the disconnected 2pin ISCV plug that should be on the intake pipe that ran across the front of the engine. To the right of that is the 4 pin plug for the fan switch. Picture two, is this near the battery as that would be the diagnostic socket. Fan should be on a 2 pin oval connector with thick wires. 2- If it's not on the engine loom then don't worry about it. 3- Never seen one on a UK sierra (is it ford marked ) but it's may be a carbon canister for the emissions system. Does it have any other outlet or control valve

I can see from the video that there is no idle speed control valve, the engine may struggle to idle without it and may well stall when comming to a halt.

There is no inscription on the box itself, but there is a sensor on the pipe going to the manifold, and this sensor is Ford marked with a number. The only thing I can say is that the push-fit fitting it is connected to on the manifold is a vacuum, I put my finger on it to check. I'd like to remove it completely, but if it is an emission control device, I'm afraid I will have to keep it. So where shall I connect this hose supposed to be connected to the fuel tank? That silver "sensor" is actualy a vacum valve and is indeed usualy used on the emisions control to allow purging of vapour from a carbon canister into the inlet manifold. So it's just emmisions control stuff you probably don't need.
You will struggle to get the engine to run at idle without the ISCV. I will check the ford wiring diagrams for the fan wiring and get back to you. TT

in you last post.
Top Left picture shows an aluminium elbow on the plenum connected to a ribbed rubber pipe by a Jubilee clip. This is the pipe that should go to the ISCV. TT

The black box is a vapor canister or charcoal canister. It's an emissions device to capture unused gasoline fumes when the engine is turned off. If you bypass it you car may smell a little like gas after you turn it off... might.

OK, in order to fit the direct induction kit, the previous owner has removed the original air filer/air box, and he blanked this long hose with a bolt and a jubilee clip. Is the part I'm missing is this one? ISCV.jpg If it is, I have one on the 2.0I SOHC lying in my garage: ISCV-20i-SOHC.JPG Is it the same part? According to the application list I've read on Internet, it looks to be. If I could use it without having to buy another one, it would be perfect Now, how do I connect the valve to the ribbed rubber hose you are mentioning? I can make a steel adapter: a nipple welded to a closure plate that I bolt to the original fitting points of the ISCV? And I connect the nipple to the ribbed rubber hose? Would that be correct? Thank you.

1991 diagrams list a canister purge valve (LHD only) so that's definatly what the box and valve are there for.
Yes the 2.0 Pinto ISCV should be fine if it's in good working order. idealy you should find an original DOHC intake pipe and modify that to fit between the filter and the inlet elbow as this has Having reviewd the diagrams, the 3 pin is indeed the fan plug. The Brown is the ground Black+Red is fan one supply Black+Blue is fan two supply. ( ignore this as you have one fan.) Fan one should cut in first, sometimes we swap for escort Diesel temperature switches as they cut in at a lower temperature. TT
