Default Starter Motor Connections

Can anyone post a pic of how the starter motor gets wired up? I've got what I think is the right part of the loom with a thick black, thick red, and a smaller red & black wire with a nut stuck on the end but I can't work out which way round they onto the starter motor.

Surely that black isnt right.
Does the contact that the black is on not come live when the solenoid if energised, so there should be a wire from this contact to the starter motor its self?

I would have thought the black would have gone on a bolts on the housing as the engine/ gearbox should be earthed.

Am i making sense?

AS per other post, thick back goes to gearbox ( although starter mount bolt should do fine )

Defo big bang theory,if you look carefully there should be a braided lead from the terminal you have the black lead on and that feeds the starter when the solenoid is pulled in.

The black lead is earth.

Just shows how little I know about electrics So in this picture, the black wire (circled red) goes onto one of the gearbox bolts? Are the positions of the thick red wire (circled yellow), and small red/black wire (circled blue) correct?

Then for the battery connections in this picture, the medium thickness black wire that comes from the negative terminal (circled red) should be bolted to the chassis and I remove the small wire going from the chassis to gearbox (circled blue)? Or should the wire go from chassis bolt to head (blue circled one)?

Just to echo what other people have said. The heavy black earth cable should be to the engine block / gearbox. The heavy red one (permanent live) is in the correct location. The lighter gauge red/black looks like your Ignition switch which should go to where you had the black one.

You should really get a multimeter on these things and trace all your wiring. The way you had this, you would have done some harm, backfeeding the ignition barrel with the battery live. I think you'll also have your alternator going onto the live as well.
