Warning lights
Hi all,
I'm using the original MX5 instrument cluster which incorporates the required warning lights but I'm using new press button switches for the "Hazard" and "Rear fog" lights. Is it OK for me to wire my press button switches to illuminate when the lights are on and use the MX5 dash warning lights to show when they are switched.... Also will the colour of the switches be an issue if the dash warning lights are illuminated showing the correct colour. Thanks

I'm using the savage switches which are led, I'm going to have them dim when the lights are on (5k resistor) and then on full when the switch is activated. It's easy to do on them as they are double pole switches.
I would prefer them to be the same colour as the telltales (red and amber) Also for iva they must be clearly marked as to what they operate. If you were worried about it for iva don't wire it up to be illuminated with the side lights. Run all the wires just don't fully connect it. |

I was just looking at your photos and see that you are using the savage switches.
Change the led in the fog from blue to amber (about £2) on eBay and don't worry about it. With regard to dimming its a piece of cake with these switches. As they are double pole switches use 1 side for the fog on/off and the other for the tell. After a lot of searching I've come up with an easy wiring no diodes as per some threads. Here goes 1. Output to led 2.tell input (fog) 3. 12v from side lights via 5k resistor I need to have a fiddle with a 5k and 10k as to the brightness I want (5k surgested on locost builders) I don't know about wiring the hazard as I don't have that switch. in completed kit car there is a feature this month showing a mx5 loom using one of those switches. i think is says you need to change the relay...
Its under the builder contributions section.

Thanks for the info ppl...
I've got a new fog light switch and I'm going to order a new amber LED for it. All the appropriate warning lights light up on the dash when the buttons are pressed so hopefully will be ok for the men in white coats... Like the idea of the lights having two levels of illumination so probably going to do the mod as SeriesLandy suggests.

I did a few tests with the resistors.
I made a test rig and lit them up in the dark and personally felt that on 12v they are too bright so ill be using a 1k resistor when the switch is on and a 10k for the side lights. I did take some pics but can't find the lead for the camera! |
