Steering Column Routing & Bushing
Hi Guys,
I have been setting up and extending my steering column today, and got a nasty suprise when I found it was rubbing on the right hand engine mount. I have managed to correct that problem using the original sierra steering column, a UJ from rally design and Rally Designs 400mm steering column shaft. I now have to support the column lower section. I have created a design for a split bush for the column - what do you think? Because it is split you would be able to replace the bushes easily without removing the steering column, plus it is based around the wishbone bush tube and bushes. The actual mounting to the car would be custom made for each car. Any thoughts? Jon |

Have you tried the alternator yet? That bracket needs moding as well. Although your plan to reroute may get round that

Most people remake the engine mounts Jon, this can be a good idea at the build stage since the Sierra rubbers are not too good with the rubber perishing and a few people have had them snap. They are also £80 to replace.
It may be a good idea to remake them and change mountings to the stiffer and much cheaper land rover mounts as it could save a lot of work in the future. The steering bushes are easy to change at any time. AndyH

Hi Guys,
I haven't got an altenator yet I'm sourcing parts seperatly, I go back to sea in about a month and in the process of trying to sell the house (anyone want to live in Norfolk?) so needed to get a rolling chasis with steering (which was achieved today). The bush I have come up with would be intended to fitted to U2, keeping the column in line with the coupling on the rack. Effectivly making a stretched S (only with very shallow angles). Ive just hit this problem with the steering shaft and the engine mount, does usign the land rover mounts drop the engine sufficently to clear the shaft if using book designed mounts?
