Engine Oil / Coolant Warning Light Temp
What would be the normal temperature for the oil & coolant system over heat warning lamps to display? I am setting up my Koso Digidash. They popped on today after 2 laps around the car park!

80/90 deg usually for water, oil 100 ish .

I suppose if they are high temp warnings you dont want them set any where near the on/off range of the fan stat, so really the water one would want to be set a few degrees before boiling which would depend on the pressure cap. I reckon for a high temp warning 110 and the oil is happy up to 120ish so set that to 115. any less and the warning lights will keep flashing up . Just my opinion.

coolent is presurised and will not boil at 100deg and it could be normal to go up to 110deg depending on your system and rad cap pressure.
i would start at 110deg for your coolent and 90-100 for your oil i cant see your engine will go any higher than that in normal operation a chap at work who does all the contract work for our engines at work said the normal diesel 15w-40 we use was still working fine at 180deg in some of thair lab tests when thay where looking into the quality of oil we use. |

I think I will run with these temps to start with and see how if it goes. they seems pretty sensable and logical. I am worried about the have such a small clio radiator with such a large V6 engine, although I guess the modern radiator is much more effient that the old sierra one. Time will tell..

there is a merc rad for the 1800-2300cc 190e thats smaller and thicker
that im running its still alloy core but is 45mm thick and around 300x300mm if its not man enough |

UPDATE
My engine appears to be running at between 100 - 103 Degrees when standing. The coolant fan is kicking in at around 104-105 degrees. Most of my overheating issues where due to a faulty thermostat that has now been removed. I will add additional antifreeze to bring the mixture to 50 /50 as I was short when I refilled it yesterday. (Currently around 30%) Will the above range be acceptable without causing any damage to the engine? The oil is around 80 degree from memory so no issue there.

engine should be ok as its not got mega hot
you can always change your rad fan switch to a lower temp one if you need. you running a m22x1.5 threaded one? ford colour coded the plastic bit on the plug for temp ranges if you have a 2 round pin one with a round plug or have a look though a intermotor catalouge most rad fan switches start500xx or 51xx http://www.intermotor.co.uk/?p=smpeu...and=intermotor to find one to suit usualy £4-5 from a auto factors i have a s/h ford orange plug one here you can have (on@92 off@87) if your in exeter @ anytime Last edited by baz-r : 21st April 2013 at 03:49 PM. |

do you mean you want to run no stat? i would not recommend it. it effects coolant flow in the head and block and you get hot and cold spots.
you used to be able to get flow correcting rings for old xflows and Aseries engines back in yester year but i don't think anyone bothers fitting them these days a stats are so cheap and reliable just run a colder one (88deg is the norm for most petrols and 82deg for diesels) also there is no benefit going over 50% with coolant and anywhere from 25-50% is ok |
