Column bearing

I have this bearing: SLFL25 LDK Pressed Steel Flange Bearing

I will use it to mount my column shaft to the bulkhead. I know than many people have used it but i am looking for pictures to see how exactly you have mounted it. If i mount it on the CP16 plate, i will have to open a large hole (56mm diameter) which is not the easiest job to do, unless i order again the CP16 from the laser shop.

Any ideas?

As its 56mm diameter u only need to enlarge the sides slightly to fit this part and this is easily done with a dremel like tool. Or cut a new rectangle with the 56mm hole in and mount it to that and then mount that to cp16 stepped back from the face.

Here you have mine. I have a wider CP16a mounting plate.

Hope this will help :)

I did mine similar to AshG's. I welded a piece of 10mm plate (had it kicking around) to the inside of the drivers foot well. It was in a kind of u shape to go round the top of the bearing flange. I can get a pic tonight of you want.
It helped to raise the steering shaft as high as possible

Thanks Sylvain!
Yes, Steve, if you can please post some pics. Thanks!

Is this bearing common to all builds for locating the steering column, not aware of it that's all

DaveyB

snapper 1st October 2012 08:00 PM

A lot of other builds MK, Locost, Robin Hood etc are aware of the advantage of using this bearing in place of the Sierra rubber donut and most use it

I think the pressed steel bearing looks a bit less agricultural than the cast one:cool: Either way its better than the poxy sierra one.

Is the sierra rubber one good enough for the job, I bought a new rubber and bush that goes with it thinking it was the norm now having seen this post wondering if it will be any good?

I've used the pressed steel bearing as shown above and it works a treat, way more stable than the stock plastic bush

For about a fiver it's well worth it IMO

The Sierra rubber will work however the bearing is better abd reduces any movement for IVA
At IVA they will pull and push the steering wheel back and forth side to side and look for movement I the column

Thanks!

Thanks for the help with regard to the steering column bush I will definitely be purchasing one based on what snapper said happens at iva sure the rubber one wil not be adequate.
Thanks again

Have watched this post with great interest. Was trying to get details on exactly this subject a couple weeks back!

Result: ordered my bearing last night

One question: Is the original plastic triangle-to-circle adapter ok to use or does it need a metal one machined (as some people have done)?

It's OK for the job.

I would say it depends on the inside diameter of your bearing. Mine (UCFL206) has a 30mm ID, and the original plastic part is smaller than this. But even though it would have fitted, I think I would have had one made in metal anyway.
Hope this will help :)

DaveyB 4th October 2012 06:36 PM

Which side of the foot well does this bearing locate and shall I fit the rubber version as well, does the bearing mount on a special bracket?

DaveyB

voucht 4th October 2012 06:44 PM

We use different bearings. Mine is a UCFL206, a bit big and heavy, but it does the job. It is placed on the outside of the foot well, and you will have to modify the mounting plate of CP16 assembly (the plate I call "CP16a") to fit this bearing, as it has to be wider.
If UCFL206 is the bearing you want to fit (see pictures on post #3 of this thread), I can send you the measurements of CP16/CP16a from Madis ("mopple" on this forum) who re-designed them for fitting a UCFL206.

snapper 4th October 2012 06:54 PM

The bearing I used needed the plastic rubbing down
I fitted it in a drill and held emery round it only needed a mil taking off

gaz05 30th October 2012 08:43 PM

I had to fit a centre joint because the alternator and oil filter were in the way. With three ujs I didn't want any play anywhere so I've used two of theses bearings with spacers turned up and tacked to the triangular shaft. I'm more than happy with it. No play at all.

I had to cut the original steering bush mount out and make a larger one and make up a 5mm bracket to carry the bottom bearing. I still need to chop a lump out of the engine mount.

gaz05 31st October 2012 09:54 PM

I've noticed a tiny bit of play in the steering and traced it to the rack coupling I bought from rally design. Anyone else had this problem?
