Hi Kev,
It might be time to think about a Laminova for cooling the oil, they are very efficient and space saving. And/or a air-to-water charge cooler for your turbo. These parts are a bit costy, but very welcome when it is as crowded as in your nose cone ;)
Laminova coolers are imported to the UK by Think Automotive (http://www.thinkauto.com/). We import them in France from them. Laminova website : http://www.laminova.se/
PWR makes very good water-to-air charge coolers, and other kinds
http://www.pwr.com.au/products/intercoolers The factory is in Australia, but they have a company in the UK.
I am aware it is a question of cost, but if you can afford one of them, it might be a route to explore.

You should know me by now Syl.....charge cooler from a mr2 turbo just been fitted, this has its own electric pump which I will be controlling via an adjustable temperature module which will also display charge temps. as for oil cooler I just need to get some pipes made up....I have manage to squeeze it all in with only 5mm spare in some places.
It feels quite odd carrying on with the build even though IVA has passed and gone.

Mr2 2 litre turbo water to air charge cooler ....played with a bit carbon wrap

Have managed to keep the inlet pipe run as short as possible which will help a lot with turbo lag .......bailey dump valve to keep turbo rpm up during gear changes

Sorry about that Kev. I hadn't noticed you already have a water-to-air charge cooler, and I thought this water radiator for your charge cooler was the new oil cooler as it looks like these very thin plate-and-fins oil cooler. I was completely wrong :o
BTW, I like your installation of the charge cooler :)

A couple of days ago I hit on a real bargain, off of you know where:D
I had worked out it was going to cost me about £50 for pipes to rig up the oil cooler (uh nee way) so I start searching on my fave auction site and find a BIN oil cooler package, but thinking it was too good to be true (£70 delivered) I asked them a question and they confirmed it was everything in the photo, why I here you ask....well....here is why.... not only were the pipes stainless but it also included a oil filter re-location as part of the kit, needless to say for the sake of £20 it was a steal and last one too and 2 days delivery

Started to install my oil cooler stuff, from what was a cavernous engine bay is now looking like a modern car (no space to put any aftermarket goodies) anyway before I got started I decided to anodize the two major alloy bits, then I got to installing the oil filter re-locator and fix the new slightly smaller (2 rows)
oil cooler below my rad then started to route the pipes, hope to finish install tomorrow

Small disaster.....when fitting up my oil cooler pies I managed to x thread one of them which showed itself as a leak, I would not care but it did not at all feel tight when I was screwing it on, anyways off it came and sure enough x threaded only thing I could try was a re-tap as some of the threads at the bottom were still good but I have no an10/jic10 tap so remembering that I had an ancient scrap ride on in the garden that had hydraulic fittings I checked to see if there was any an10 nuts and there was one... so took this off put it in a vice and using a junior hacksaw cut around 7 slots across the threads, these would provide a cutting action if I can get it square on the damaged fitting.
using it very carefully I managed to get it square on the old threads then proceeded to put it on ...turn a bit take it off, clean it and repeating this action every third of a turn I managed to recover some of the threads that were not damaged. I think there was a modocum of good luck.
Right so oil cooler back in and taped up (lots on the rethreaded one) I was able to apply the same torque on both nuts with no sensation of "stripping"
That was last night and I have not tested it yet, I was really peeved at that mind BUT joy of joys, my age related number and tax disc turned up this morning K7**BON yep ...tres tres bon indeed. well it would be if it wasn't bluddy raining....will let you lot know how it goes soon :D :D :D :D

Hi guys....it has taken me ages to get the bluddy engine sorted and finally after changing and checking injectors, cop's, igniters, ecu's I finally discovered what was wrong ....it was disgustingly simple which annoyed the f**k out of me, I was running to low a fuel pressure 28psi when I needed at least 36psi so I whacked it up to 36 and went out a few hours ago and scared myself half to death:eek: the acceleration is effin mind blowing, it has taken me long enough to vindicate my choice of power plant and I have yet to take it up to stage 2 but not yet as I don't think I could cope with another 50 horses on top of what I have without seriously soiling my pants.
So now I can say anyone up this neck of the woods wants to see and feel what
a fast roadster is like just drop me a pm, only proviso is it has to be dry with no chance of rain:rolleyes:  will get a vid sorted out soon when I find my camera mount.

Got some more stuff done on the car, like the mandatory stripe in carbon wrap, also cut out some holes to allow cooling for the oil cooler, temp fitted a plasma gauge for oil pressure, and fitted an electronic boost controller to unleash the stage 2 power (I think I may have spawned something of a beast)
Running 14 psi boost at the mo, room for another 3-4 if I want it.
Do not have a front No plate on....it is behind my seat awaiting being pulled over by bib......some pics

Should have done this ages ago, fitted a small car fire extinguisher on the seat back between the seats for very easy access.
Have invested in a new gear knob and it has a secret function .....it is a wimpey passenger ejection seat button:eek: cleverly disguised as an engine start button, the pyro's I bought from the North East Aircraft Museum and are good for 100ft.... need your own chute tho....this was another reason for fitting the fire extinguisher

Just a little tip for anybody who is at the stage of routing pipes/wires down the t/tunnel, it would be a wise decision to add a few extra wires that do nothing but go from end to end of the chassis, I knew I was going to fit water/meth injection at some point but thought it would be an easy retrofit.... WRONG was I If I had put them in when it was easy to do so it would have been a breeze.......SO if you plan to retrofit stuff later on say after IVA don't its a right PITA

got some el cheapo gauges from China and I am pleasantly surprised at how clear they are even in daylight I have just mounted them in a rough pod fashioned from a blown vinyl torque wrench case and mounted so I can see them through the steering wheel, oil temp, boost and oil pressure, my state of tune means these are the most important ones to monitor.....apart from the rev gauge which I seen hitting 8k:eek: recently, (stage 2 map does away with the 7.5k rev limiter ):)
anyway this is what they look like

I am afraid in my quest for "Mo Farrah" av gon an blawn me terbo:mad:  ..... my boost had been set way too high and the bearing could not cope, so I think I might have to detune my engine until I can build a more robust set up.
Tub is beyond repair as compressor wheel is damaged, so I bit the bullet and ordered a chinese copy as there is no way I can afford even a reconned tub, came yesterday so I will get some pics of it up later.

Can you get high capacity/high pressure oil pump for that engine,if not shim relief valve for a bit more oil pressure to feed turbo and rest of engine better.

Turbo's fail because people never let them spool down after hard driving and it was probably well used prior to you,bit of a bugger after all the graft :(

Rebuild kits are available but would you trust something that's got to run at silly revs and heat without being set up properly, No.

Awesome Bob might be handy to have a spare
Paul....it was a rebuild by me bud but I think I pushed my luck way too far, I always idled it down tho.....when you say shim it I'm guessing that would be a smaller hole on the return that would increase the pressure around the journals, but I suppose the risk there would be oil seals, they would be needing to be the uprated staggered type

flyerncle
22nd July 2014, 12:52 PM
Find the relief valve, there should be either a plunger or ball with a spring behind it and this relieves the oil pressure by bypassing it,if you increase the spring tension you increase the oil pressure as it takes more to lift relief valve, oil seals should be ok as the increase is not forced against the seals to any degree they just seal the crank/cam etc against the oil floating about in the head etc (if you get my drift)

Ok...not been doing much tinkering lately as I have been having a whale of a time blasting allover the place and really enjoying the roadster, I cannot believe how well it handles 2nd and 3rd gears are absolutely evil, but thanks to my early decision to try and keep a bit more weight at the back end has paid off in terms of traction of which it has heaps but can be easily made to let go when I want it to and not when IT wants too.
The only mod I have done is halorize my headlights with some very bright led rings which were a perfect fit over the glass lens, I have them wired in to be daylight running lights which seems to be the craze at the mo...you will have excuse the fly splats.

About time I put some effort into my upgrades....those cones things I made from paper were templates for cone things in perforated stainless steel to slip into my current silencer set up which re models it into a laminar flow silencer, what this does is it smooths out the turbulence/spiralling of exhaust gasses and produces a straight flow out of the exhaust, it also increases the scavenging effect because of the increased speed it produces, I have also found it quietens the exhaust note substantially which is a bonus because my car was loud.
If you google laminar flow silencer you will see what I mean.
will be documenting my dash build soon from some gorgeous twill carbon fibre and epoxy.

Well here we go then Steve...first of all I sat down and thought What am I going to use.....mdf again....no, too heavy ....Ally... no, too wasteful.... I wanted something easy to work with.....standing in my back garden and looking at my roof (cannot remember why) and the answer was staring me in the face...FACIA BOARD the more I thought about it the more it made sense... hdpe with a return on the bottom that will stregthen that part. Another real bonus ....cost,
£13 for a 2.5m x300mm and leaves me with loads spare to experiment with.
I have also discovered it forms very easily with a heat gun so wheel arches and such will be easy to fabricate and a front splitter (you were right Paul)
Anyway first part I started with was my instrument binnacle, So this is a work in progress ....first pic is where it will be situated ie replacing these gauges.

Ho hum....been a while since was on here even though I look every day ....well my engine went through a complete rebuild this year including honing the cyls then new rings and fresh ACL race bearings throughout, been great for a few months...then on taking Vmax out for a spin, promptly snapped my timing belt. Have got a Gates belt to refit but have not yet discovered if there is valve damage, pretty sure there will be but before I yoke the head off will fit new belt and carefully turn engine over to see, as it is an interference engine I would consider no valve damage would be nothing short of a miracle

Bad crack Kev,make an adapter out of an old plug and 1 cyl in turn shut the valves and pressurise cylinder to see if it leaks, may save you loads of graft.
Don't forget to put it in gear or engine will turn.

Wow its been a while guys......So my car is now up to its first MOT.... buddy hell where did those 3 yrs go. When I last did my dash I neglected to inlude some idiot lights which I have now discovered are manditory for MOT and a working Speedo. So it is now time for a dashboard revamp and a thorough remodelling of the whole car,(big scoop bonnet, carpeting, stereo, new grill, wheel refurb etc etc)....might be selling it this year.
anyway here is a few pics of where I am at with the new dash pod.

Ahhhh, as feared a snapped timing belt, but I must be the luckiest guy around as it seems only one pair of valves had "kissed " the piston. When I leak tested the head there was no leaks, not convinced I took the valves out and checked the in a lathe with a dti and got .02 deflection, I can live with that, so it is back together this time with a Gates belt. Just finished putting the dash back in yesterday so MOT before the end of the month so as to tax it for June...whooooop.

More seriously Kev', I hope you are OK selling it and it is not by necessity. We all know here that it is a very fine and very special built. So good luck!

One question : it looks like you have "Clubman" Corbeau Seats, is that right? On the paper, they are 495mm wide. As the seat room is 450mm wide on the Raodster, wow could you manage to make them fit please?

I'm looking into the possibility of changing my Cobra seats for another model, but there are not a lot of options out there.

Ok been a while but decided to put the roadster back on the road this month as a prelude to getting 13 months mot on it in a week or so.
Also decided on a few upgrades first one being a nosecone scoop to direct cool air towards the air filter. The part I used was a vac form of a mini bonnet scoop I had lying around that I made into a plug, the great thing was by using 1.5mm PETG it was pliable enough to "mold " to the roasters shape, although it was not far off any way. After cutting the excess from the vac form I was able to see where I needed to cut into the nosecone worrying thing to do but worth it after all cut out and fettled I sprayed the scoop black and fitted it with double sided tape then glassed it in on the inside, the finishing touch was some chrome trim that had just the right thickness to match the edge of the scoop.
If anyone wants one I can do them for £18 delivered this would be the whole vac form it would be up to you to trim ( relatively easy job) any way here are some photos

I decided the roadster was due some carpet so the latest phase was to start with the passenger side, already had a roll of black so that went onto the side and trans tunnel then I had some old Primera matts that I trimmed and used on the floor, then finished off with a piece of stainless steel on the "door top"

Hi Ian...well first off it is the inside of the bin that shows, having had a liner in meant that surface was pristine, and the nice bend comes from the bender I made for forming tanks ....a little bit of cloth in between stops any scratches while bending.

Hi kev what size alloys do you have is it 17" or 15" or what size are they. I also see you using the ca18det engine and I plan on using one aswell what is your thoughts on that engine

K4KEV
18th June 2018, 10:44 AM
Hi Ricky....they are 17" with 205 50's and fill the arch's beautifully, The CA18DET is a fantastic engine that will take stage 1,2 and 3 with only programmed chips in a normal ecu....I did have it at stage 3 but went back to stage 2 as it was more controllable/predictable, for loads of info join Driftworks and SXOC they were invaluable for prepping the engine loom and tuning tips.
Take care with the trans tunnel at the gearstick area as it needs to be a little wider to accommodate the passage of the two large flat nuts either side of the gearbox, they are indent springs for the gearstick to "spring from side to side".
Everything I did to fit the engine is there in my thread, just takes a while to find it lol.

Ricky
18th June 2018, 11:15 AM
Thanks for the info the other thing I'd like to ask you is what have you kept the engine leaned like it is in the original car is it for height issues or what and how much does it stick out the bottom if I may ask and are you using the original gearbox . Is it possible to lay the engine straight instead of leaning

K4KEV
18th June 2018, 05:05 PM
At the time, I just wanted to fit the engine the same way as it lay in the 200SX
You could have it level but you will have to take into account the gearbox will angle off centre and the oil pan will not be level (could overcome that with shortened oil pan)....doing this will give you clearance on the bonnet/plenum, you will see with my car it needed a bulge of some sorts to clear

Ricky
18th June 2018, 05:27 PM
Ok cool . So I'm thinking of fitting it straight not sure how the gear leaver will be maybe I have to modify some way. You don't by any chance have a pic of the gearbox when it's laying on the floor would like to see how the leaver leans

K4KEV
19th June 2018, 12:16 PM
If it was me Ricky I would take gear lever out and heat a point a bit further up from where it exits the gearbox then bend it anti clockwise by the same angle you need to rotate the engine by, just been and checked the angle of mine and it is 11.7° off the horizontal

Ricky
