Flange adpator

Hi,
I have so much difficulties to get a propshaft for my set up. First, because, even though everybody is complaining about the crisis, nobody looks to want to work: I placed 4 enquiries online (3 in the UK, one in Sweden), and I got only one reply. And when I visit engineering companies here in my neighbourhood, no one wants to shorten my shaft and rebalance it.

The only company who replied is North West Propshafts, and a very nice guy over there (Michael, I definitely recommend them) took care of my problem, but it is not simple.

I am using a MT75 Gearbox, and he made me remove the big rubber joint, then the big steel damper flange, to make sure of what was underneath.

Attachment 1638
Attachment 1637

There is a 3-bolt flange directly bolted on the tail shaft of the MT75 where the custom propshaft should be bolted.

Attachment 1636

But it is not a standard connexion for them, and it raises the price of the propshaft to a level I can not really afford (especially as I have to pay for the shipment to Sweden)

He could make a propshaft with a round differential flange at each end, and it will be much cheaper (and lighter too). Certainly something like that:

Attachment 1639

But I have to find someone who can machine a special adaptor to make the link between the 3-bolt flange from the MT75 (3 holes 96mm PCD, 16mm Locating Pin, 12.2mm Holes) to a flange like the Sierra differential round flange (109mm Dia, 90mm PCD, 56mm Male register)

Could anyone of you who has a lathe easily do that, and how much would you charge? If you are interested in doing the job, you can reply here or send a PM please.

Thank you very much.

Try Comercial Propshafts of Team Valley Trading Estate Gateshead,Tyne and Wear,England. Stan is the guy to talk to.

Just wait till I look at the transit gearbox which has an mt75, I have one in the shed which may have the 4 bolt flange. It may be the same as the one below.

Mk5 Transit MT75 gearboxes are round with four bolt holes and should be a direct fit for that box, later mk6 MT75 are fitted with 3 pin mounts same as that one.

If this is also drive link automotive I used them. Fantastic service. Shortened and balanced same day and also painted!

Thank you for the replies and the tips.

It is rather a good news that this Transit flange exists, it would solve the problem straightly :) guys, you just made my day!

So Bob, I can't wait to know if you have one. That would be so great! If you do have one, please send me a PM for price and post to Sweden.

Thanks you very much.

Sylvain,

D&F Propshafts supplied me the adaptor and a new prop on a 3 day turnaround. This was 18 months ago.

Good luck

Thank you John,
How much did you pay your propshaft + adaptor if I can ask please?

Yes, pretty costy... more or mess same as they quoted me at North West Propshaft...

Now I'm checking with Bob's Ford Transit flange, but I need to check the gearbox shaft diameter and the number of splines. For that, I need to remove the 3 bolt-flange from my MT75, and it has an odd nut, 12 edges, star shape (see picture), and I don't have a tool for that :(

K4KEV 18th April 2013 11:01 AM

obviously needs a job specific tool to undo that like an offset ring spanner style crows foot .....I would take it off with a semi blunt cold chisel ....yes it might bugger the nut, but it is the only way I can think of.:(

baz-r 18th April 2013 11:51 AM

use a 12 sided socket not a std hex type or off set ring spanner

The adaptor I used locates on the spigot and is bolted directly onto the existing 3 bolt flange. Therefore no need to remove it unless you are renewing the output shaft seal.

Do you mean that if I remove the existing flange to replace it by the Ford Transit round 4-bolt flange, it can not be done without destroying the output shaft seal and I'll have to change it too?

Finally I could remove this bloody flange!

I bought an offset 30mm ring spanner as Baz and Kev advised. Thank you guys. But it was not deep enough, so I had to grind around the ring to make it fit. Took me ages

Then of course the nut was jammed because of the rust, and I used a lot of WD40. I made a set-up with a steel bar, clamp locking pliers to hold the spanner on the nut, not to tight, but enough, and hammered the spanner. after quite a lot of time, I finally could undo the nut :)

Pictures here if you want.

Otherwise, this more for Bob/ Bob, here are the dimensions of the splined part:

26 teeth
small diameter : 26.7mm
big diameter : 28.6mm

Diameter of the part in the gearbox : 40mm
Length on this part : 28mm

(Hight definition picture on my blog, at the very end of the same post)

Can you check if your ford Transit flange has the same dimensions please, and let me know with the end of the week-end?

Thank you very much.

twinturbo 19th April 2013 06:33 PM

There's a ford special tool for that.

TT

bloody hell Syl.....what a palaver!!! (english for waffling conversation) I admire your dogged determination at not letting it beat you.... nice one bud.;) ;)

You are in luck , the transit flange is the same. Email your address and I will get it to you.

Excellent new's Bob, thank you so much :)

I sent you an email with my post address, and you can reply by giving me the price you want and the shipment cost to Sweden.

I also just wanted to make sure that the round flange will fit the propshaft. The propshaft will come with the same flange that fits on the Sierra differential axle.

Size/register/PCD (holes are not equidistant) of the differential axle are as on the sketch below, so the flange should be the same.

Could you please confirm?

Thank you so much.

Just measured this flange and it uses different reg diameter and bolt hole pcd to that drawing. Its not a problem for me to make the prop for you with the sierra flange one end and the transit the other if you want.Do you know what length prop you want?

Bob

voucht 20th April 2013 02:19 PM

Damn  Not lucky all the way!

Just sent you another PM.

Thanks.

robo 20th April 2013 02:48 PM

I will see if the transit flange has the space to re drill for the sierra pcd. PM sent.

Bob

voucht 21st April 2013 06:01 PM

That would be great Bob. Just let me know. Perhaps the reg of your flange would need to be machined too?

I just sent you a PM about that and with the measurements you asked for.

Thank you :)

John P 22nd April 2013 09:12 AM

Slightly off-topic but I have also been looking into this and also trying to find a lower cost solution than having a propshaft made.

I've read somewhere that it's possible to use a Landrover propshaft as this has a sliding section and UJ at each end of a one-piece shaft.

Has anyone heard of this before?

John.

I have measured the transit flange and the register is 72.15mm and the pcd of the existing holes is 6 bolt @ 97mm. So with a simple ring made up the register can be reduced and it does look like the sierra prop pcd can be drilled on to it missing the transit holes. I will try to find a sierra flange just to make sure.

Bob

voucht 29th April 2013 05:58 PM

Thank you very much for that Bob. That would be great if you could make the necessary transformations of the flange :)

But please let me know by PM what you would charge for the flange+work+shipment because my budget is tight and I need to plan the money for that.

Thank you.

voucht 7th May 2013 05:07 AM

Bob,
I just sent you a new PM.

voucht 3rd June 2013 07:35 AM

Bob, I sent you a PM yesterday. Could you please reply?
Thanks.
