Clutch Cable Linkage - Pedal Box End

Help Please................

I have spent the last four hours playing around with the original Sierra XR4x4 clutch cable. I have made a small roller to help gain adequate travel on the clutch pedal, however to gain the 30 mm movement required on the fork arm it is causing the pedal to be in an un-drivable position.

Does anyone have any photos of how they have connected it???

I will upload the photo of what I have done onto flicker - linky below

Would it not be feasable to remake the clutch pedal with a curve on it to give the necessary clearance/travel to put it in a more natural position? just a thought?

twinturbo 20th February 2010 03:56 PM

Is this a common problem? the 4x4 cable is not different in it's fittings than any other sierra clutch cable.

I have been thinking about remaking the clutch pedal, however was hoping for some info before I end up with 10 different versions!

Hi Spike,

did the same as well. Seems ok, not tried engaging with engine running yet though?

As with Daz, not tried it with the engine running yet.

Quite happy to send it up to you so as you can try before you buy ;) :) :)

Nick,

If you want to try it, i'll whip mine off and you can try it - save Bonzo posting.

i used a 1.3 capri cable works lovely and is nice and short.

The difference in some of the clutch cables is the length of the outer cable cover relative to the inner cable, if the outer cover is to short you will have some difficulty getting the action you want.
You can simply add some packing, round tube welded to the pedal box or washers to play with the correct length, to effectivelly extend the outer cover length.
You can do this at the gearbox end but beware of the cable chaffing.

Cheers Guys, I managed to test the bite of mine by lifting the rear of the car on the pallet truck. It seems to require about 25 mm clear movement to prevent the wheels from turning and to allow first gear to engage. However, the clutch plate was already in the engine, so it may change once renewed. The Capri clutch cable about £10 on ebay, so I will get one on order.

I must admit, I hit a build milestone yesterday without even knowing it! Having the rear wheels turn under the power of the engine. I kinda wished I had tightened all the Nylocs. If so I would have maybe given the wheels a bit of a spin!

The capri cable appears perfect with the adjuster.

Not sure if it's of help to anyone.
But I made a clutch cable adjuster from a piece of studding, drilled through
and a nut with a bit of tube welded on it.
Bit of a bodge, but works a treat

Bonzo 21st February 2010 10:18 AM

Agreed, some adjustment in the cable will probably be required ..... Unless you are having a custom cable made

Sorry if you already know this Nick ..... The original Sierra pedal had a built in automatic cable adjuster built into it.
Once the standard cable is fitted to the Roadster all adjustment is lost & you start to fight the free length of the inner cable ;)

Davids idea is a decent solution to cable adjustment

As Ash pointed out, The 1.3 Capri cable is ideal .... Just the right length, clevis pin eye on one end, ball fitting on the other + a decent adjustable section that will allow adjustment at the bell housing :)

Just thought this may help to get things clear in your mind mate :)

Based on this thread I have brought a Capri Clutch cable from the bay.

£7.99 and no delivery charge, they seem to have a few as well.

Little Linky

Cheers Ginge

Spikehaus 21st February 2010 06:56 PM

Just ordered the same one Ginge, its cheaper than the one was watching on the bay!

mr-p 21st February 2010 07:03 PM

Does anyone know if this fits the DOHC as well??

Cheers

davidimurray 21st February 2010 08:23 PM

is there a difference between the Capri MK1 2 3 1600 & 2000 GT OHC Clutch Cable you guys have bought and the Ford Capri MKI 1300 1600 OHV Clutch Cable 68-72 (Item number: 270518956334 ) - seems to the be £2 cheaper than the other.

Bonzo 21st February 2010 09:05 PM

Possibly just a tad difference in length !!

I bought the same cable as Ash . The cheaper OHV engine one ..... Had the engine & box test fitted & the cable looked to be ideal :)

EDIT

Here's an ebay linky

I sent him a question and he asked if it was the Capri owners club.
