Fuel pipes
Does anyone know if the fuel pipe(s) must be proud of the chassis/body as per the brake pipes or are they allowed to touch ?

As long as they are firmly P clipped at the required intervals there will be no problem

ideally they should come into contact with a sharp corner or anything moving or hot

Personally, I have kept all my fuel rails away from anything so that they only ever touch the p clips (or hose at the ends ;) ) in the same way you do with brake pipes. My logic behind this was that in use the pipes will vibrate and if they touch anything like the edge of a tube they will start to 'wear' through as they do.

Use copper pipe as much as you can to keep them rigid then where they are close to any projections, eg chassis rails either end of tunnel, sleeve the copper pipe with some of the rubber hose you'll be using at each end. Will do the job fine.

they cant touch regardless of what material they are made from. when do you recall a fuel or brake line touching the chassis on a production car? been there got the t-shirt
the iva rules are pretty simple if you approach them like this. Think would ford, vauxhall, bmw etc do this on one of their cars if the answer is no then it is unlikely to pass. it wont work for everything but its a good rule of tumb to work by. |
Can you use brake pipe, for the fuel pipe and what size.

I originally used rubber fuel hose from tank to carb, was never happy with it so I ripped it all out & I,ve now fitted copper fuel pipe, I bought a roll of Micro Bore heating pipe from B&Q, does the job nicely (£23 a roll ), & used specific rubber fuel hose at either end to connect the copper pipe to the tank & carb. If you are using a fuel injected engine I think you need a return fuel line back to the tank too . cheers andy |
