how to get lock barrel out of steering column

hi guys,

it seems my key was eaten by the vast pile of crap in my shed, so i have just bought a replacement ignition barrel with keys, however i cant figure out how to get the old one out. Is there a special way or do i just get medievil with a lump hammer and cold chisel?

thanks

Put key in,

Turn to position 1

Press small silver dimple on underside of lock barrel ( via hole in lock barrel holder )

Pull out .

Now, as you have fallen at point 1, you need to very carefully drill the dimple with a strong drill bit.

Turn the key to position 1 and use a rivit to push the detent...

Then out it pops and you can see the detent that holds it in.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Apart from drilling, I have also heard of people using a punch and lump hammer.

try the new key in the old barrel :D. ford keys are crap, my brothers mondeo key used to open my dads brand new fiesta, wouldn't start it though because of the immobiliser.

If you have a door lock lying arround. You can read the code from the plates in the barrel and a locksmith should be able to do a new key from the code.

Take the part stripped door barrel and they can check it.

kind of defeats the fact that hes already got the new lock set :D that cast bit that the barrel is in can be removed from the column. i would take it off put it in the vice and smack the hell out of the retaining pin using a hammer and punch.

failing that screw a slide hammer into the key hole and draw it out thats what we used to on the old farm transits so they didnt need keys.

You need to cut down between the barrel and the housing effectively slicing the shiny end off cleanly, then the tumblers will just pull out and you can turn the lock & remove as normal, I.E. turn to the position to release the little plunger.
You can do this with a normal hacksaw blade easily, an air saw is even better but use a thin blade to avoid damage to the housing too much.
THis was common practice when I was in a Ford main dealer, sometimes with several air lines coupled together to reach the car in the car park !!!
Dennis.

This should work as well.

It's worrying how simple it is get into a Ford lock

thanks for the help guys,

iv just done, the new key wouldnt turn but the five year old transit key from work did. If id known how crap ford keys are i would have just pinched one from work instead of buying a new ignition lock barrel!

I managed to get a new lock here :)

Ebay linky

Good value I thought

Only had one key for my lock & have a spare Sierra steering assembly here with no key .... Kill two birds with one stone as they say ;)

Mondoe up to 2007, X type Jag or even the Aston Martin DB9 use the same barrel.

You should be able to get the Mondy or X type one down the scrappy.
