Steering column Extension
 

I need one a steering column extension as my donor had PAS.
Found one on Ebay but it says it needs new rubbers, are these readily available?

I don't think that you will find the ruber ring is available as a service part.

Had a sneaky feeling that the rubber ring is riveted in place, I have just been out to check mine & it is definately, factory riveted.
The long & short of it is, you'll probaly have to buy a whole new assembly from Ford :eek:

Rally Design do a suitable steering rack coupling though :)

Use one of those cheeky wee knuckles from rally design, look better and better clearance wise as bit like those knuckley things in a socket set...;)

I am with you on that one Mark :)

Not the cheapest to buy but at least it will get rid of that rubber ring that's going to be about 20-25 years old ;)

So what parts would I need? I'm presuming the sierra coupling, group 4 coupling and a shaft

Ronnie is defo right,it's a complete assembly with the rubber doughnut.

RD bits and pieces are better.

I guess you would need the Escort coupling & shaft

Would imagine that the Sierra coupling has a spline one end & a triangular bit at the other .... Better suited to joining the extension shaft to the exhisting Sierra triangular lower steering column ??

Not 100% sure on that though .... If I were to have a gripe with Rally Designs website, it would be that there is not enough product information & the images could be larger/better quality :confused:

To do a real fair dinkum job, I suspect you'll need, 1 X Escort coupling, 1 X Sierra coupling & 1 X Extension shaft ( A quick call to RD would confirm this ) .... Soon starts to get expensive :eek:

I belive I have a spare, original Sierra rack coupling here that is still serviceable.
Just need to double check the spline size. :)

You probably have a coupling like this on the end of your column ?



If you have, I guess the most low cost way of doing things would to do the following.

Cut the pice in the photo, midway in the round section ( Circled )

Extend the shaft using some suitable, thick wall round tube.

One end should then join onto the steering shaft & the other end should fit into the triangular end of the Sierra type group 4 coupling.

Still best to check with RD to see if this is the case though ;)

I'll post some pictures up later once I get out into the workshop :)

I am guessing that your steering rack connector is the larger splined power steering one .

The picture I posted was the top section of an earlier non power steering top section ( Going spare if you need it ) ;)

I will check the fitment of the spare lower section I have & get a photo up later :)

Perhaps this picture will help :)



Bottom of the picture shows the steering link assembly as fitted to the Sierra.

Part A fits to the end of the steering shaft ( Wheel side ) & part B fits to the steering rack.

At the top of the picture, you'll see an extension I made by simply cutting part B in half & extending with a piece of thick wall tube .... Bit crusty now but it was only made as a temporary thing to allow me to move my build about & sort out any clearance issues ;)

Now here's the big if.
Assuming the Rally Design Sierra group 4 coupling has a triangle on one end & the other end has a suitable spline to fit the Escort rack !!??

You could do away with part B.
Cut part A in half & extend to the length desired.
You may have to remove the flat tang from the end of the triangular peice in order to engage it into the RD coupling if it proves to be suitable for the job.

STEERING COLUMN SHAFT
[RD849]

The sierra column coupling fits the end of the sierra column as it has the triangle fitment.The column shaft will need to be extended as its only 400mm long and then the group 4 coupling will connect the end of the shaft to the escort steering rack.

Thanks Ronnie, that has helped out loads :), I think I'm gonna get the bits from Rally Design, although it's gonna cost about £70:eek:
