Harness mount positions

Just a quick one !

Can anyone see a problem with the top harness mounts being on the cabin side of the rear roll bar ? I have bought some westfield harnesses that are snap fittings on the top and bolt in at the bottom but to get the best position for routing them around the seats means the eyebolt will be in / close to the main hoop pointing to the front of the car on the outer shoulder straps ?

mr iva will look at them as a projection i think.

I have the same type of harness mounts but mine are Willan,s,

I realise that my seats are not the same as per your fitment position but I,ve fitted the Hooped "eyelets" for the upper harness mount & covered them in trim ( securely ) & used a small split pin to stop the snap fitting from being opened,
here,s 2 photos, MAYBE they are helpful ?
cheers

Mmm bit of a problem there then ! My seats are f/glass i could cut some holes in the to allow the harness to pass through the seat itself ? Any probs there?

You don't have to put the harnesses through the seats, they can just go around.

monsterob 2nd May 2012 08:08 PM

It would be easier to go through the seat as i could locate them in the same manner as andy.

Do yours bolt all the way through andy into another thread ? I was just planning the nut welded onto the top of the crossbrace with a hole in the bar. Captive. Ut as it were ?

snapper 3rd May 2012 07:30 AM

The tube should be threaded all the way through and the seat eye bolt long enough to go the length of the tube

rally205 3rd May 2012 11:21 AM

Why can't the harness simply be looped around the crossbrace like in a rally car? Surely if it is good enough for the MSA and FIA it is good enough for IVA.

monsterob 3rd May 2012 11:49 AM

Does it state they have to pass all the way through in the manual or simply state they have to be secure ? The nut would be part of the crossbrace and the threads would be in safety and the lower brackets work in the same way ?

Without checking I would imagine the problem with looping the harness round the crossbrace is that in my old race car I looped the harness round the strut brace on my rollcage and although this was fine for racing I did find there was a problem with latteral slip of the shoulder straps but in racing the harness is tightened up a lot more than in a road car so in the road car the harness could slip in the an accident

Just my thoughts hope it helps

Ive had a read now i found my manual it states the threaded section should pass all the way through the tube !

Bit overkill really the belts that saved my life last time were bolted into original mini seatbelt mounts ie captive nut on a small spreader plate ! Very similar to the design of the lower seatbelt anchors in the book

mgglep 7th May 2012 09:28 PM

seat belts

after reading all the posts i wanted to do it on the safe side and dropped the 7/16 unf bosses all the way trough the cross brace and welded top and bottom if you use tapped bosses rather than through holes toy can use eyes or bolts

HandyAndy 9th May 2012 01:27 PM

Apologies for the slow reply :o

My upper mounts are as "Snapper" has said, a thick walled fully threaded boss that goes all the way thru the roll bar cross brace & welded top & bottom then the eyelets/hoops for the snap lock of the harness mount clipped onto them.

Just a note.......as it is possible to unclip the harness quite easily from the eyelets I,ve fitted some very small split pins thru a hole that is already there in the snap fitting so that they can,t be easily unclipped.

cheers

Whats the opinion on the fixing bolt's,will they need to show through the boss or will they accept evidence of loctite etc.

monsterob 10th May 2012 07:36 AM

I beleive they need to see evidence of the bolt all the way through

davedew 10th May 2012 01:10 PM

The bolt does not need to project all the way through. Loctite is a suitable securing method. Gus's car went through IVA like this without question.

K4KEV 10th May 2012 02:22 PM

Gonna throw in another re this issue ....I have turned down some 12mm nuts just to take off the corners, then I mounted these while attached to the a long bolt into holes in my cross brace so each boss was half in and half out of the thickness of the cross brace tubing, then welded them up top and underneath then when cool I removed the bolt.......so my threaded section does not go all the way through.......does this mean it would fail or would it be enough and if not could I use a long bolt instead with a nyloc on the bottom,
Failing all else I could drill them out and put a full thread length boss in, don't want to do that tho.......any thoughts peeps???

flyerncle 10th May 2012 06:43 PM

Probably be assesed on it's merits as to if it's fit for the use it is being put to.

If that makes any sense,it is down to the tester on the day.

It was mentioned to me by a tester that he would hope that a seat belt mounting would be strong enough to lift the car up by.
