Petrol Tank and Boot area
 

The other night i went to see my mates robin hood and had a spin well what a thrill i'm deffinately going to be building one now A roadster not a robin hood.

anyway more to the point one issue that he raised to me was the size of petrol tank he had fitted, i would like to know what is the biggest size tank able to be fitted and also above his tank he had a peice of nicley trimmed Plywood which he used for an extinguisher (as his twin webbers like to light up some times) and generally use it as a small boot with a leather cover buttoned on to it.

what do you think about the boot idea and size of tank?

There are some rules in the IVA manual about petrol tanks and boots. In short the tank needs to be vented to outside, a luggage compartment has to be lockable, the lock has to meet IVA rules regarding exterior projections, the tank is not allowed to live in an enclosed boot space. I have a Westfield alloy tank in mine that holds about 4.5 gallons, if you were making your own tank you could get a much bigger one in there. If I fit an extinguisher it will live in the car between the seats so that either driver or passenger can grab it very quickly.

My tank / boot area will be open to the elements for the test, with a full top panel that has no opening on top of the rear tub, might install a boot at a later date ;)

Fire extinguisher will go between the seats....after IVA, even tho its a safety device I,ve heard some builders having problems at IVA with sharp edges on the extinguisher :confused:

My own tank was bought off "fleabay" , holds 25 ltrs which should be good for about 120 miles or so, might be less on a track day :D , its not to the book spec but for the price (£30 delivered ) it was too good not to, & it still leaves me all the space above the diff as "storage space" :)

Hi, I too have the Ebay tank and its currently set up sitting flat on the supports and sticking through the two rear uprights, Im using a quantum rear body which sticks out a little further than normal which allows the tank just enough room.
now the question is :- do i need protection for the tank from say a rear shunt for IVA puposes and do i need room behind the tank between it and the body?
any thoughts appreciated, thanks

And remember each Gallon of Fuel extra is another 4.54KG on the total weight of the car at IVA.

Actually its about 3.34kg per gallon as 1lt of petrol weighs approximately 737g

I have the same tank as you, sitting upright so the fuel outlet is at the bottom on the passenger side...........
I,ve fully fitted my rear tub ( GRP ) & I have 10mm between the tub & the tank.

The way I see it , this tank is in the same place as per the "Book" tank, only difference being it stands up a bit taller.
I think most "7" style cars have the tank in the same place, unless a fabricated tank is made to sit above the diff.

Spud,s car has a "book" tank & passed SVA no probs with it.

Thats my take on it anyhows.

i have a custom ally tank which is pretty big i had in the dax rush. will fit injection or carbs. has filler on the right rear inspection plate on top - vented, baffled, mounts are 'L' shaped brackets on the bottom edges - just 4 bolts fixes it.

cost me £220 to get it made and used it for just a few months till i smacked me car up... its sat in the garage all warm waiting to get out my way!
