I don't know the carb on your engine but I would be about 90 per cent certain that's where your problems lie. Your car is running seriously rich - an air leak would make it run lean, the only thing that can make it run rich is overfueling which is down to the carb.

would over hauling the carb ang giving it a good clean help as i could do that in an hour or 2..?
