Default Modifying TR9?

This is possibly a silly idea...
...but is there any reason I couldn't remove the drivers side section of TR9 and weld in another section of tube in the same place, but about 2 inches lower?

The reason is, I'm using an MX5 steering column which is much fatter than the Sierra, so the steering wheel ends up being a bit on the high side.
If I lower that section of TR9 I can lower the wheel enough to see over it
Unless anyone has any better ideas?
