Ahhhh, as feared a snapped timing belt, but I must be the luckiest guy around as it seems only one pair of valves had "kissed " the piston. When I leak tested the head there was no leaks, not convinced I took the valves out and checked the in a lathe with a dti and got .02 deflection, I can live with that, so it is back together this time with a Gates belt. Just finished putting the dash back in yesterday so MOT before the end of the month so as to tax it for June...whooooop.
