the steering column gets in the way in the BMW.
The engine itself is not that wide, especially the older 12 valves but as Chris says i think you would have to get a little creative with the ancilary brackets which are generously postioned and the exhaust manifold. It is quite a canted setup aswell, which is why the primaries want to ocupy the same space as the steering column and why it seems wide.

If you want some measurements of an old M20 lump let me know.
