I did a 12 week p/t night course at college, and to be honest almost from the word go we each got into a a curtained little welding booth and for 99% of the time just welded scraps of metal together with maybe 10 mins of advice per 3 hour session.

While I dont profess to be anywhere near an expert, I am certainly 100 times more confident than I was.
"as long as it sounds like its cooking like bacon, your on the way"
Was the first bit of advice I remember.
