I have seen a couple of rover v8 to type 9 bellhousings either on ebay or the v8 forum but they arnt cheep. I have also been told by several people not to go down that route because the type 9 wont be able to handle all the extra torque!

In the end i have decided to go with a lt77 gearbox from a tr7 as the 5th gear is taller and is actually an overdrive gear. cheap too, only cost £47 for the gearbox and it bolts onto the sd1 bellhousing with no problems.

im not 100 % sure about that gearbox, im sure someone who knows more about gearboxes will have a look soon. The only thing i would say is that bell housing wont fit on the v8. As far as i am aware you also wont be able to use a 4wd bellhousing because they are too long......

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

It looks like the short answer is, no I can't do an (easy/fairly cheap) conversion - it''ll be much easier to sell this box and get another one - the Borg Warner T5 seems to be a fairly popular choice for this engine.

So Coozer, if you want to make me an offer for the gearbox (with or without transfer box), PM me

sound to me like you should be shoping for a borg warner t5 from an v8 tvr or such like
cant rember what mgbv8s or sd1's had could also be a t5

loads of 2wd cars had a rover v8 so it shouldnt be to hard to find a cheapish box to bolt up directly

nobody wants old thirsty v8 now so it should be pritty easy to find somthing from a scrappy or ebay

Cheers Rince, whereabouts in the world are you? Transport considerations are at the front of my mind....

Just to add something, I had a LT77 in my Striker. The Rover 4 bangers don't have a bellhousing patterns on them, they use adapters. SO, I had a setup from a Sherpa van that could easily be re-drilled to accept any engine you want.

That would be my plan to mount my spare T16 turbo engine to your 4x4 box for my little off road project. That would make it go!

I'll have the lot off you if your not miles and miles away

LG,
Steve
