Agree with Ash, unless you want to use the opportunity to go to 2.1l, it's probably better to start with new. If you're having a rebore, you'll need new bearing all round, and it would be false economy not to replace oil and water pumps, and cam belt. The costs will soon be more than a new engine. Alternatively, get another one from the scrappy, cheap as chips, and there are loads of good ones out there.

Cheers

Adrian

I woud have to agree with Ash & Adrian

Been there & done that a few times .... Never works out as cheap as you thought it was going to be !!??

As said, once the re-bore has been done it would be madness not to do the crankshaft bearings, the majority of the time this will involve a crank re-grind.

Once that lot has been done it'll be time to examine the head ?? If the bores are badly worn then the cam followers are not going to be much better, nor the valves & seats for that matter !!

Gaskets, head bolts & pumps to be added onto the final total

By the time that little lot is added up, a crate engine from GBS seems like a bargain.

If you don't want to spend that sort of cash, you should be able to find a good, used 2 litre zetec engine for not a lot of money

Unless an engine is exotic or difficult to get hold of, engine re-building tends to turn out being a money pit.

Not worth the expense, by the time you have added bearings and gaskets it will be close to GBS crate engine price.
I would buy another second hand one.

That's the trouble. They're ten a penny down south but I live oop North. Proper North that is. Not bloody brum or Nottingham.

Seeing the engine Borers tomorrow. I'll make a decision after that. It's not looking good for this engine though.

I'm going to hang on to them Baz. Sorry.

The cheapest the engine guy can get pistons for is £75 each so that makes this engine scrap. I'm still going to hang on for a Zetec so I'll put the head and sump etc away until something turns up.

could just bung a new set of rings in and make do until after iva
sounds the best plan to me
i bet the bores are not all that bad as long as there is no scratching should be fine

zetecs were designed to be a throw away item, rebuilding them is always a costly adventure.

bearings £100
Pistons £300-400ish
oil seals £80
Cambelt £50
water pump £35
full gasket set £100
then machining £100 ish

i ask why bother even after you have done all that you still have worn out cam gear rods etc etc.

spend £650 get one with everything all new.

there are two real options with zetecs

buy an old one for 50p and run it until it goes bang then get another one for 50p and do the same again

or buy a new one.

if you are totally confident that the head is good then you could just buy a new short block but it seems like a lot of bother for an old engine.
